Political Wooing

McCain Sees Troops Coming Home by 2013

And I see a big fat lie.

Can the Republicans be anymore obvious? First they suddenly believe in global warming and now McCain wants to get out of Iraq? What happened to the "I'll chase Osama bin Laden to the gates of hell" McCain, or the "We'll stay in Iraq for another hundred years" McCain? I'd like to think the GOP is no longer disillusioned and close-minded under the guise of conservatism, but alas, all we've got here is politics at its best (and of course, by "best" I mean worst).

So what's he saying anyway?

“By January 2013, America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure in her freedom,’’ Mr. McCain said at the Columbus Convention Center.

Okay, not bad...

“The Iraq War has been won. Iraq is a functioning democracy, although still suffering from the lingering effects of decades of tyranny and centuries of sectarian tension. Violence still occurs, but it is spasmodic and much reduced.’’

And he will guarantee our success, how?

The United States, Mr. McCain added, “maintains a military presence there, but a much smaller one, and it does not play a direct combat role.’’

Wait a minute! I'm sorry, but that still counts as "staying in Iraq" in my book. And tell me how "military presence" does not equate to "direct combat role."

In Afghanistan, he said, an increase in actionable intelligence will have led to the capture or death of Osama bin Laden, and “there is no longer any place in the world al Qaeda can consider a safe haven.’’ He added: “There still has not been a major terrorist attack in the United States since September 11, 2001.’’

Oh I get it now. So before we pull out, he's going to use his authority to up the ante in Afghanistan. Things get worse before they get better? Uh-uh, I don't think that's how it's going to work. And what if bin Laden is already dead and disintegrated? They never did find the Fountain of Youth, though they sure shed a lot of blood in the process.

Oh, and the terrorist attack comment? Yeah, about that, it's only been 7 years. Maybe I'm too young to recall, but we never encountered something of that caliber in the 7 years before 2001. In fact, the last time there was a domestic attack like that was probably Pearl Harbor, no?
